Map Layout

Map layout is where your gameplay becomes real and interactive. A well-designed map guides players naturally without explicit instructions.

Core Principles

Flow (Movement and pacing)

Flow defines how players move through your level.

  • Smooth navigation → good experience

  • Confusing layout → frustration

Landmarks (Orientation and memory)

Players should never feel lost.

  • Unique structures (tower, statue, glowing tree)

  • Distinct color zones

  • Environmental storytelling

👉 Good maps are memorable, not just functional.

Balance (Fairness and gameplay design)

Especially critical in multiplayer or combat-heavy games.

  • Equal opportunities for players

  • Risk vs reward placement (loot, cover, vantage points)

Common Layout Types

  • Linear → guided story experience

  • Hub-based → central area with branching missions

  • Open-world → freedom and exploration

  • Arena → tight, competitive gameplay loops

Creadev Workflow Tip

Start with greyboxing:

  • Simple shapes instead of detailed assets

  • Focus on gameplay first

  • Replace with final art later
